BRAINWAVE COHERENCE AND THE TECHNIQUES THAT SUPPORT IT Part One MEDITATION The books of Vedic literature contain many exhortations to experience ‘the settled mind’ and to gain Enlightenment but they have little to say about the processes and mechanisms that lead to that state. Whilst the Vedas preserve the ancient knowledge of consciousness in all its aspects, they do not define or discuss levels of higher consciousness other than through the insights that are associated with those levels. Said to have been cognized by the ancient Vedic Rishis from the state of transcendental consciousness, the Vedas contain a wealth of Cosmic wisdom but not much else. |

Chapter Two The Processes and Mechanisms of Meditation It is not, perhaps, without reason that the Vedas have so little to say about the states of consciousness that are experienced on the way to samadhi, or transcend- ental consciousness. Individual consciousness, the consciousness we experience and that constitutes everything we are as people, is just that -- individual. Apart from the fact that we all have higher levels of consciousness there seem few common elements in the way people process and use consciousness. Conscious- ness is as individual as individuals themselves. That, anyway, is not the concern of the four core books of Vedic literature. They are essentially liturgical and contain little else but hymns and prayers, in the case of the Rigveda mainly for cows and male children. |
||||
| But the four core books of Vedic literature do not stand alone. Alongside the more recent epics of Vedic myth, there are many other texts that date from around the same period that have more to say on the subject of consciousness. Among these are a collection of texts known as the Upanishads. And it is these that deal with the subject of consciousness. The word Upanishad means a secret or mystic teaching and its roots suggest a teaching passed on by word of mouth from Master to Chela (pupil.)
It is within the Upanishads that we find the clearest definitions of the core doctrines within the ancient Vedic and more modern Hindu spiritual systems. Among the doctrines that are defined and discussed in the Upanishads are the nature of the self, yoga, meditation, Self-realizsation, karma and reincarnation. Despite their place as the defining texts at the heart of Indian spiritual culture, the Upanishads remain unremittingly holy books. They speak of the universal spirit (represented by the Hindu God, Brahman) and the individual self (atman.) The Upanishads have been said to be ‘a celebration of the state that lies beyond thought and the workings of the intellect.’ And that seems a pretty good description of them as they have little to say about life in the world. At least nothing good. Try: ‘ignorant,’ ‘bound by duality,’ ‘blinded by attachment,’ and ‘deluded souls.’ They do, however, have much to say about the nature, source, qualities and effects of meditation and transcendental consciousness. The Mundaka Upanishad says that those ‘faithfully following a life of meditation, they are knowers, tranquil . . . . Free from attachment, they leave the body through the gate of the sun, and reach the supreme Self, the imperishable Spirit.’ |

| The same text goes on to describe the absorption of the individual self into transcendental consciousness and into the Cosmic panorama.
Science is only in the early stages of understanding the brain and its functions. And, in fact, it does not see the mind as levels of consciousness anyway. Indeed, the concept of the mind consisting of levels of consciousness is an individual one based on personal experience. It is the process, in meditation, of experiencing the same thought in distinctly different forms and volumes (as it were) that leads me to see the mind as a hierarchical level-based entity. It goes almost without saying that Vedic literature has little to say about the mechanisms of meditation. Without a knowledge of the nervous system and the physiology of the mind, how could it? For information on that we must look at the modernisation of meditation, which just happens to be the next part of this series. Before we leave this subject, let us offer you an example of the universality of the state of transcendental consciousness through two quotes that both mirror the tone of Vedic spiritual literature perfectly. They come from the bible. The first one is: ‘the kingdom of God is within you.’ And the second one is: ‘be still and know that I am God.’ Sound familiar? In the next part of this series we will be looking at the process of modernisation that has overtaken meditation to transform this ancient and esoteric technique into one that is a 21st century buzzword. It is an amazing tale. |
